Overview
The L4646 is a flat-window model in Hamamatsu Photonics’ 10 W High Quality (HQ) xenon flash lamp family. With a 3.0 mm arc gap, UV-grade glass window and side tube, it delivers a continuous spectrum from 185 nm to 2500 nm. At just 20 mm in outer diameter, it is one of the smallest xenon flash lamps Hamamatsu offers, and requires no forced cooling—making it easy to integrate into spectrometers, industrial inspection instruments and portable devices.
Key Features
1. Instantly high peak output Compared with a halogen lamp, the L4646 produces roughly 1000× the peak intensity at about 1/10 of the input power, with a color temperature of approximately 15,000 K and a broad UV-to-IR continuum.
2. Highly stable light output Hamamatsu’s proprietary electrode geometry and materials minimize electrode erosion and keep the discharge position stable. At the 5 W reference condition (1000 V main discharge, 0.1 µF capacitance, 100 Hz repetition), the flat-window type achieves a typical light-output stability of 0.4% CV—critical for long-duration absorbance, fluorescence and scattering measurements.
3. Low heat generation, no warm-up Pulsed operation keeps thermal buildup low, so the lamp reaches a stable output almost immediately and causes minimal thermal damage to samples. It also eliminates the need for complex cooling design in the end instrument.
4. Long service life The guaranteed lifetime is as high as 1×10⁹ flashes under standard operating conditions, cutting maintenance frequency and replacement cost.
5. Compact and easy to integrate The 20 mm body and flat output window simplify coupling to fibers or imaging optics. It pairs with Hamamatsu trigger sockets E2418 / E6188 and power supply modules C13316-02 / C13315, giving designers a mature, turnkey drive solution.
